Steep Asks of Our Creatives

They want us creative types to think outside of the box while being stuck inside the box - and do it by lunch.

Perhaps you were lucky enough to realize you needed a degree in design to be able to do anything creative in marketing.  If you were able to get your family to support an art degree versus something more practical then you might be on your way to actually being paid to be creative – on a schedule, in a box, with a fantastically unrealistic deadline. Super fun.

In order to be able to keep this pace as a creative you have to tune down your creative abilities. Do they get dulled over time? Do they suffocate your real worth by truncating a piece of who you are everyday? I think that may be the case. I have too often heard “oh they are just a frustrated creative.”  This should not be an accepted assessment of our beloved creative types. Something has gone seriously off course.

What can we do about it?

I wonder what the world would look like if we carved out more time and space for our talented creative types. If project managers were guided to budget more time and money for the creative process to run A to Z - would it harvest better results? Would the world be more beautiful? I think humanity would be more inspired and celebrated in general. Would it bring a sense of connectedness and peace in a way we haven’t fully grasped yet? The answer is yes. I think some of our outstanding social problems would be solved. We are paying the price for our money driven bottom lines in ways I am not sure we as a society fully realize.  If we dull our creative types and they lose their capacity to reach for that deep thought and creativity then we are stunting the advancement of humanity.  I do not want to live in a world surrounded by a first or second draft. Do you?

When you are jealous of this guy because you actually need a nap to come up with the best creative idea for a project that's due in an hour.
